univie: summer school "Dutch in a Central European context"

Literature and Identity

The univie: summerschool 'Dutch in a Central European Context: Literature and Identity' takes place at the University of Vienna from July 6th to July 13th.

This year more than 40 students from eight different Central European universities participate in a weeklong series of lectures and translation workshops led by six different lecturers.

What happens when a text crosses a linguistic and cultural border and starts to circulate within a broader literary system? The theme of the summer school being literature and identity, students engage with issues arising during the process of translation and address questions concerning the interaction of texts and contexts in different linguistic settings. How translators deal with the cultural contexts at play and how literary institutions influence and shape translations are some of the themes that will be addressed throughout the summer school.

Combining a critical reflection centered around the core concepts selection, production, consumption, interplay and globalization with workshops focused on translating hitherto untranslated Dutch texts into Hungarian, Polish, Czech, German and Serbian, this summer school facilitates cultural exchange and offers the possibility to explore new cultural horizons.
